Stacey Tyrell Explores Mixed-Raced Heritage in Photographs

Brooklyn-based photographer Stacey Tyrell has come up with an engaging and visually exciting project involving her own personal history. A Canadian-Caribbean of Irish, English and Scottish extraction, Tyrell has used this rather unique background to explore such themes as the preconception of Whiteness and Blackness in Euro-centric societies, and how her own past is shaped by these different elements. The title “Backra Bluid,” itself is drawn from both West Indian and Scottish words. The images, in a highly-stylised and poised fashion, provide a beautiful exterior in which to tackle these issues.
