Distortions and Shadows: The Imagery of Steoville

In Steoville’s first series shown here, “Distortions,” the face, hands and body of a young man are stretched and melted into infinity. It could be a great representation of an alienated experience, a man enclosed in himself, struggling with his own troubling thoughts. In the second series (third image down), “Shades,” the artist uses doilies and knitted tablecloths to create patterned shadows on a man’s torso. Both series are photographic studies, and quite possibly a reflection of the self.
