Brendon Burton is a visual artist based in Portland whose style reflects his rural upbringing and an enduring fascination with lonely, decaying places; throughout his work, abandoned homes cower before immense backdrops of fields, hills, and storm-bruised skies. We’ve featured his work before, but here is a new series titled “American Gothic,” which reimagines the beauty and terror of the old “wild west” through a contemporary lens. In cinematic, dreamlike scenes, Burton’s subjects (his friends) wander the dark countrysides, looking curious, ambivalent, or slightly afraid, all seemingly at risk of being swallowed up by the vast horizon. With potent moodiness and a gnawing existential dread, “American Gothic” tells silent stories about isolation, uncertainty, and the strangeness of the world.
